Elite / popular culture distinction depends on power. Dominant culture is sometimes challenged by sub cultures. Often sub cultures position themselves as being explicitly against the values, products, and practices of dominant culture(s) Culture as a site of difference as well as shared traits. Which isn"t to say that all sub cultures are explicitly against dominant culture(s) Hipster culture is less about resistance than it is about cultural appropriation and irony. Hipsters have been criticised for both these traits. What is a brony: a "brony" is an adult (often male) fan of my little pony, friendship is magic, you"re joking right, no. Bronies are a subculture positioned against a dominant cultural value (irony) inspired by a pop culture reference (my little pony, friendship is magic) that was created to sell a piece of mass culture (my little pony toys) Bronycon is an excellent example of group ritual.
