Contemporary problems in religion & culture: winter semester notes. Scientology became a religion on february 18th, 1954. Best known as a popular writer of adventure & science fiction stories. Hubbard"s own biography as evidence of his credibility, and that his unique experiences have offered him greater insight into life, people, the world, etc becausehe has experienced so much. These spread of scientology was the result of the organization/evangelization. Scientology is based on hubbard"s book dianetics(1950) which analyzes the human mind. Basis is that we have reactive minds which store harmful memories and limit. The idea that every experience that we have ever had is recorded & accessible to our minds. The goal of dianetics= to clear to mind of painful memories. This is done through a process called auditing". Auditing: a process in which a pre-clear (someone who has not yet cleared their mind of negative things) speaks w/ a trained scientologist to clear their reactive mind.
