Projects dominant ideas onto a group of people. Western idea of religion does not include what many other groups, such as indigenous people, believe to be religion. Concepts, short answers, short essay type question, based on reading and lectures. Descendants of those who inhabited a country at the time when people of diff. cultures/ethnicities arrived. Unique culture, gov structures, beliefs etc. and distinct from dominant ruling group. Characteristics: self-identification as indigenous at individual level and accepted by the community as its member. May be hard to trace which community a person descended from: historical continuity, strong links to territories and surrounding natural resources. Need power and wealth to identify and represent yourself ex. The eng jackets, or else someone else will identify you as something else. Study of indigenous people often reinforce the idea of them vs us: different language used to explain indigenous religions vs other major religions.
