Richard hobbs > studied british pubs, engaged in academic inquiry, he had too good of time, became a participant rather than an enthrographer. Gary fine (chefs in restaurants ) - passive, did interviews, his prescience in the kitchen made him do tasks. Simon winslow (bouncers at bars/club) - didnt always decide to get into fights, often became involved. Advantages - better access, less reactivity, don"t think they are being watched or judged. Disadvantages - anxiety, cannot collect documents, fear of being uncovered. Field notes - human mind is fragile. Stephen baron - skinheads and street gangs, punk rock subculture, exploratory method, transcribed unstructured interviewing, explained participation was voluntary and they could refuse to answer questions, he doesn"t want to participate in criminal activities, triangulation - For what topics an purposes are field studies most approporiate.
