Why do we need theory in sociology: to string together inter-related concepts/ideas, to understand/find relationships between social phenomena, to predict social action. Key characteristics of sociological theory: 1. Commitment to understanding the social totality: 3. Dependency theory: developed vs undeveloped, under developed, underdevelopment was and still is generated by the very same historical process which also generated economic development: the development of capitalism itself (frank 1992: 80). Hypotheses: hypothesis 1: the development of the national and other subordinate metropoles is limited by their satellite status . Limited by: characteristics of capitalism, introduction of foreign values (eg: foreign currency) (eg: hut tax) pressured into earning cash. Export economy: coffee, cocoa, and tea and several food and fiber crops in- cluding peanuts, cashew nuts, tobacco, sugar, and cotton. Ghana: britain made dependent on cocoa exports cocoa prices. 7/3/16: proletarianization migrant labour, hypothesis 2: satellites experience their greatest economic development if and when their ties to their metropolis are weakest .
