Document Summary

Classical and biological explanations for deviance seem to explain some kinds of deviance fairly well. The psychoanalytic theories of sigmund freud and his followers have had and continue to have a substantial impact on explanations of deviance. Freud"s conception of the human personality as a three-part structure of id, superego, and ego is a useful conceptualization of how biological and social factors come together in the individual mind. The id, the only part of the personality present at birth, is the completely selfish, biologically rooted drive for the gratification of instinctual needs such as food and sex freud"s pleasure principle. The superego is developed through the process of socialization and incorporates within itself the expectations of society, as taught by significant others parents and role models. The ego stands between the id and superego, balancing their conflicting demands and keeping the individual in touch and both inner reality and the reality of the environment freud"s reality principle.
