Technology development: by looking at technology, we can learn something about society, technological development always impacting the social. Cctv: originally designed to reduce crime but was not effective. Social media: migration from myspace to facebook. Mobile communication: we would assume that the better technology wins and the rest dies out, smartphones are better than basic phones yet basic still exist, price is a factor. Social construction of technology: the same thing can mean different to different people, what technology is based on the position of different social groups, single technology can be ontologically multiple things, different things for different groups. Means different things, therefore is different things: material semiotic: analyses meaning in relation to the material of the technology. Roots: strong programme: against a deterministic view of nature theory r/s. Impartial with respect to truth and falsity, rationally or irrationality, success or failure both sides require an explanation.
