SOCY 284 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Virtual Image, Virtual Community, Virtual Reality
Document Summary
The virtual: anything that is so in essence or effect, although not formally actually. No matter how big the effects of the virtual are, they seem to lack a proper ontology. Angels, manly valor, and womens chastity certainly constitue at best a virtual image the virtual is precisely not the realy; thats why post modern like virtual reality, it seems transgressive. Traditional societies - community held together by webs of bonds which are mutually reinforcing, everyone knows everyone else. Modern cities - too many people for tradiiton communities to develop loose, transient social ties. Time space compression - the shrinking world - because we communicate 24/7 , the distance in the world isn"t there. Deterritorialization: dislocation and disembodying of communication from actual places ; a lot of communication does not belong to a place. De-traditionalization: heightened reflexivity and less bounded by tradition; alternative communities. All communities larger than primordial villages are imaged. Community never simply based upon presence and proximity.
