Trends in the occupations of american college graduates since the second world war in the united states. Over these decades we have seen rapid increases in the economic returns to a college education, suggesting that we have in fact moved towards a knowledge economy. Therefore, although professional occupations have grown since 1950, they have not kept pace with the expansion of higher education. Almost all agree, though, that the core of a profession is control of an area of abstract knowledge, which gives the occupation a certain amount of autonomy and authority. 3 beliefs of what defines a profession: early scholars argued that the important societal roles played by professions, such as providing valued services to clients and society, justified their special position within the labour market. Researchers pointed to four factors undermining the professional position: growing education levels of clients, information technology, the growth of profession-like occupations, and increasing organizational control.
