Socy 389 lecture 17 & 18 (week 10) Policing, adult and juvenile courts: social science research on sentencing: design, 2 further research lines: Christy visher conducted empirical studies in us looking at police warning men got stopped more than women (11% of men and 7% of women). Slight difference could be that men are more likely to drive and speed than women. She was interested to see if anything more happened (pulled over, car searches, arrested). She found men are more likely to have all three. Example: getting pulled over by police for speeding. Demeanor: notion of being highly respectable and following expected procedure. Deference: how you follow procedure and communicate with the officer. Legal factors: seriousness of offense, presence of weapon, what injuries were sustained. Extra-legal factors that shouldn"t matter demeanor, demographics (race, gender, age) Visher focused on extra-legal factors and found that demeanor was particularly important.
