If an asset has significant components that depreciate at different rates, then separate the asset
into its components
Ex. Airplane: components would consist of the aircraft frame, the engine, cabin
interior, and equipment
Lump-Sum Purchase Of Several Assets (called a basket, group, or lump-sum purchase): several
assets are acquired for a single lump-sum price that may be lower than the sum of the
individual asset prices
Proportional method: Allocate lump-sum price to individual assets based on ratio of its relative
fair value to the fair value of the group
After acquisition, many costs are incurred related to PP&E Examples include:
Repairs
Maintenance
Betterments
Replacement of major parts
Major inspections or overhauls
These expenditures may be expenses or capitalized, depending on their nature and the
circumstances
Maintenance and ordinary repairs are expensed
Maintenance includes lubrication, cleaning, adjustment, and painting, incurred on a
continuous basis to keep plant assets in usable condition
Repair costs include outlays for parts, labour, and related supplies that are necessary to
keep assets in operating condition but neither add materially to the use value of assets
nor prolong their useful life significantly
Ordinary repairs are usually relatively small expenditures
Additions: extensions, enlargements, or expansions of an existing asset
Are capital costs
Consider if a separate component
A betterment - cost incurred to enhance the service potential of a long-lived asset
Can be either a replacement (substitution) or a renewal (large expenditures)
Capitalized and recognize a loss for the carrying amount of part being replaced
Major inspections are capitalized and written off over the time to the next inspection
Any remaining carrying amount from the previous inspection is derecognized
