Pragmatics
-In contrast to semantics, which is the study of the possible meanings of words within
a relative social vacuum, pragmatics asks the fundamental question of:!
•What does it mean in context?
-Pragmatics, in other words, is the study of the extra-truth-conditional content of
language that transcends literal or direct-correspondence meaning such that
interpretation is predicated on the kinds of knowledges and presuppositions shard
by speakers and interlocutors. !
•Linguistic context.!
•Situational context. !
Deixis
-What are some fundamental ways in which we come to share meaning?!
•Deixis: a system of “pointing” in language to indicate through implicate what you
are talking about..!
•Here/there; this/that; me/you; near/far; today/tomorrow. !
