Renaissance architecture was born in history of classical architecture. Pushed towards new phase through historical upheavals baroque: branched from different countries, not just italy, stemmed from renaissance but defined by own time period. Religious resurgence of church time of splendor. Also brought on questioning of church science: new quest for rationalism= reasoning, began in renaissance with math + proportions, new interest developed through study of human body. Baroque art concepts (had big effect on architecture: dynamic movement, full-bodied colour, zig-zag composition, powerful illumination, naturalism. Depicts a natural activity rather than a formal setting. New focus on individualism: the calling of st. matthew (1597-98), caravaggio. Chiaroscuro= contrast of light + dark in drawings + paintings. Informal setting: the night watch (1642), rembrandt. Using this to highlight a storyline showing important characters as lighter than their surroundings.
