Qualities of baroque architecture: greek cross plans, ovals + ellipses, star shapes, complex geometries, sculptural facades, broken pediments. Qualities of rococo architecture: mostly applies to interiors, painted surface ornaments, white + gold colour schemes, flowing lines + arabesques (3d relief, mirrors. Plateresque= silversmith-like details: low relief, bears no relationship to underlying structure. Looks 3d, but also flat enough to look painted on. Spain: 1556: saw development of purist styles. New professionalism in understanding how buildings are built. Similar to italian approach: 1650-1750: baroque + rococo styles flourished vigorously. Fantastical approach: madrid + other cities: turned towards more classical styles, pedro machuca (1490-1550) Enclosed majestic circular patio: diameter: 30. 5 m, superimposed doric + ionic colonnades within a square block. External facades have rusticated doric columns (lower level) Both storeys are surrounded by rondelles: details remind of michelangelo.
