Intro to the industrial revolution: resulted in the transition from natural materials (wood, brick, clay, etc. ) to glass + steel composites. Emerging intellectual revolution= based on renaissance humanism: philosophers of the time began discussing egocentrism (human goodness, believed that humanity= full of potentially innocent + rational beings. New revival of classicism through rational thought (following the exaggeration of the baroque era: 18th c. = age of reason, more purified neoclassicism through rational thought. Still interested in feeling + fantasy brought forth in neo-gothic trend. Age of reason + romanticism england: experienced a palladian revival. Bega(cid:374) (cid:449)ith the retur(cid:374) to the si(cid:373)pli(cid:272)ity of palladio"s style. This period resulted in lots of different branches of neoclassicism: sublime. Architects felt that this could be achieved through gothic architecture. Themes: defined as reactions to esthetic stimuli (not based solely on beauty) Similar to the adrenaline rush of riding a roller coaster. The excitement evoked by a piece of architecture (pure emotion)
