Basic elements are abstract ideas: affected by other factors when given physical form, light, colour, temperature, smells, materials, etc, also elements in identification of place, abstract subject to control. Light: condition of arch, usable element; manipulated, distinguishing space by sound they make or its effect on sound, use of sound in religion to identify pales of worship eg gong, wind chimes, bells. Texture: sight and touch, relates to material quality. Scale: relative sizes, experience of space, identifies place. Time: places as theatres lighting, alters character of place, shade from light as place itself. Colour: with light, identifies place, suggests moods, place recognition. Temperature: central consideration for arch, may be associated with light. Sound: may be as powerful as light, material change, alterations, natural not subject to control, maybe anticipated positive, modifying element. Complex places, some ancient types (e. g. altar, tomb) Ancient places address fundamental aspects e. g. shelter, eating, socializing.
