In most cases, caribbean countries followed a pattern to nationhood: emancipation, decolonization, independence. Bridget brereton (1989) described three general stages that postemancipation societies went through in the caribbean: an adjustment period, a quiet period, and a period of upheaval/transformation. In the british colonies, emancipation was declared in 1834 (for the french it was 1848). Once the slaves were freed, a period of forced labor ensued known as apprenticeship. This was yet another attempt by the colonizers to control (cid:498)their(cid:499) labor force.
