Document Summary

Brain consists of the brainstem (medulla oblongata, pons, mesencephalon), cerebellum, diencephalon. Chapter 16: brain and cranial nerves (chap 22, p. 591-593) (epithalamus, thalamus, hypothalamus), and cerebrum (fig 16. 1) cortex = grey matter located on the surface of the cerebrum and cerebellum. Nuclei = deep clusters of grey matter surrounded by white matter. Extremely delicate requires protection provided by: housed in bony skull, cranial meninges, cerebrospinal fluid, blood-brain barrier. Cranial meninges (fig 16. 3-16. 5) surround brain and continuous with spinal meninges. Dura mater = dense irregular connective tissue thickest and most superficial two layers - adhere tightly to cranial bones (fig 16. 4) Endosteal layer = outermost layer fused to periosteum of cranial bones. Meningeal layer = inner layer that is continuous with dura mater of spinal cord: dural sinuses (fig 16. 5) = spaces formed where two layers of dura mater are separated from each other.
