BLG 10A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Nasal Septum, Zygomatic Process, Facial Skeleton
Facial Bones (14 bones)
• Mandible
o U-shaped or lower jaw
o Largest and strongest bone in your face
o Forms the chin and two uprights (rami=branches)
• Maxillary Bones
o Form the upper jaw
o Central portion of the facial skeleton
o All facial bones articulate with the maxillae, expect the mandible
• Zygomatic Bones
o Irregular shaped
o Cheekbones
o Articulate with the zygomatic processes of the temporal bones posteriorly
o Articulate with the zygomatic processes of the frontal bones superiorly
o Articulate with the zygomatic processes of the maxillae anteriorly
• Nasal Bones
o Thin, rectangular shaped
o Form the bridge of the nose
o Attach to the cartilages that form most of the skeleton of the external nose
o Articulate with the ethmoid posteriorly
• Lacrimal Bones
o Delicate finger-nail shaped
o Articulate with the frontal bone superiorly
o Articulates with the ethmoid posteriorly
o Allows tears to drain from the eye into the nasal cavity
• Palatine Bones
o L-shaped bones (shaped horizontally and vertically)
o 3 articulate processes:
▪ pyramindal
▪ sphenoidal
▪ orbital
• Vomer
o plow shaped
o lies in the nasal cavity, where it forms part of the nasal septum
• Inferior Nasal Conchae
o Paired thin, curved bones in the nasal cavity
Hyoid Bone
• Not part of the skull
• Looks like the mandible in the neck
• Only bone in the body that does not articulate with any other bones in the body
• Contains a body and two pairs of horns
