Document Summary

Community: consists of interacting species living in a confined area. Biologists analyze interactions between species by the effect on fitness: the ability to survive and produce offspring. Species interactions: a relationship between 2 species (-) interaction. A relationship that hurts one of the species. A relationship that has no effect on the members of either species. A relationship that provides a fitness benefit to one of the species. 3 key themes: species interactions may affect the distribution and abundance of a particular species, a coevolutionary arms race occurs between predators and prey, parasites and hosts, the outcome of species interaction is dynamic and conditional. Intraspecific competition: occurs between members of the same species due to density dependent growth. Interspecific competition: occurs when members of different species use the same resources. Niche: the range of resources a species is able to use or conditions it can tolerate. When the niches of two species overlap > interspecific competition occurs.
