Document Summary
Cell biology lecture notes chapter 1 and 10 (sept 14 onwards) E. coli has the highest number of genes per unit length of its genome. Keeping contents inside cells, protecting and serving as a boundary/ selective barrier. They allow for the compartmentalization of the organelles in the cell to separate the individual reactions in the cell. Membrane protein transporters function as gatekeepers acquisition of key nutrients and allow for the inside of the cell to maintain homeostasis in correspondence to the outside environment. Function as sensor for signal detection ( hormone receptors located in the membrane) ! enable cell to cell communication. Made up of lipids and proteins (integral are the ones that pass through the lipid bilayer) Glycoproteins(carbohydrate linked to a protein) and glycolipids (carbohydrate linked to a lipid) Most abundant lipids are phospholipids and sterols (cholesterol) Glycerol backbone, two fatty acid tails linked to first two carbons of glycerol(16-20 typically)
