Risk assessment is narrow in scope; protection concerns vs. promoting child well-being, insufficient attention given to children not likely to be physically endangered, need for a broader range of child needs. Need to always consider the potential outcome (in the family related to risks) and prediction for occurrence and re-occurrence. Art of risk meaning knowing based on relationship-practice wisdom, science of risk meaning assessment through empirically based instrumentation. Child welfare risk assessment as an estimation of the probability that a child will be maltreated in the future. Suicide risk assessment as an assessment of the state of mind of the individual and prediction of the probability that they will follow through with a plan for suicide. With the concept of risk we want to be able to predict the chances of the outcome. Risk also used when determining risk factors in conjunction with protective factors both are inputs rather than outcomes.
