Autopsy is the examination of a body after death (i. e. a post-mortem examination) Goal of forensic/medicolegal autopsy is to determine the cause of death and conform the manner of death, often used in criminal proceedings. Medical examiner/coroner establish cause and manner of death. Tissues and organs retained for pathological toxicological examination. Following are collected and sent to forensic lab: Combings from head and pubic hair (sex crime) Buccal swab (for dna typing purposes in the mouth; helps pick out loose cells within saliva) Vaginal, anal, and oral swabs (sex related crimes) Hand swabs from shooting victims (for gunshot residue analysis) Swabs of body areas suspected of being in contact with dna arising from touching or saliva. Hand stubs or swabs for gunshot residue analysis. External include broad overview of condition of body and clothing. Blunt force injuries is like being hit by bat, pipe, or hit by car: cannot bleed through the skin; but potential bleeding inside.
