No longer the question: current questions need to focus on: Problems with role/job of mother: how can mothers work, and create a work/life balance within limited time/(cid:499)time crunch(cid:499) Value conflict (shiela kitzsinger) between western values and those required for mothering (i. e. productivity vs. responsiveness) Role ambiguity (unclear job description: source of stress, includes mixed messages. Presence of the (cid:498)expert(cid:499) role/job: devalues and confuses mothers and, experts tend to disagree, every argument has a counterargument, many ways to do the same thing right. Better model: professionals valuing rather than judging mothers, collaborative and empowering mother/professional relationships. Moving closer to the current ideal of men as equal partners in child-rearing. Change due, in part, to men having to share the job market as a result of: women"s movement, women"s/mother"s want and need for financial, separation, divorce, remarriage independence/security, unstable workforce, family separation due to immigration. Father role/job perceived as second to mothering, historically.
