Historically mainly occurred through widowing now mainly because of divorce but also many other reasons such as women with child but not living with the child"s father or another partner, a single person adopts or using in vitro. Majority of single parent families are headed by females (85%) 75% of single parent households occur after divorce or separation and the remaining 25% have never been married. Many children at some point in their dependent years will spend time in a single parent family. Many single mother struggle to meet ends meet and are stuck in low paying jobs that provide little satisfaction. Single father are at less risk of economic disadvantage. Some single parents receive support from extended family with other are alone with their children and are socially isolated. Children from single mother homes don"t fare as well as those from two parent homes.
