Abuse: refers to power & control exerted over another person can includes excessive physical force and threats. Maltreatment: intentional harm or endangerment of a child including - unkindness, harshness, rejection, neglect, deprivation and/or violence. Physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, excessive monitoring and control. Children and women are typically the victims. Authoritarian fathers can use violence to gain/maintain control which can be perpetuated. Women more likely to engage in corporal punishment. Socially isolated and lack support systems / reluctant to use them. Have a relationship with the abuse victim. Failure of parents to consider long term effects of punishment. Inappropriate parenting based on parents needs only. Social values and culture condone or contribute. Inability to regulate emotions and blaming others. Higher risk for children in single parent homes. Children younger than 5 are over-represented amongst those living with domestic violence.
