Document Summary

The notion of what family is changes over time and the law must stay up to date with social norms. Legal definition determines the life of an individual by dictating what rights they have and which punishments and restrictions are applied. Personal definitions depend on life experience and demographic. Some definitions vary because they are written for specific reasons and audiences. The evolution of a society changes the traditional notion of family through new living arrangements therefore the concept of family is continually being defined and redefined. Some types of families are so new that there isn"t enough information available about them. As we expand our knowledge about families we improve our ability to create and uphold positive relationships with them. Professionals must understand how different experiences of a child affect them, their individual family members and the unit as a whole. We must be able to empathize with the families we are working with to build a relationship.
