The religious influence before 1968 made divorce very rare and often forbidden because laws were very strict but the grounds for divorce expanded in 1985. Between 35-42% of marriages have ended in divorce. Marrying at an early age (before 20), lower socio-economic status, living together before marriage, peoples whose parents have had a divorce. Most frequently cited reasons for divorce: money, control, substance abuse, cheating. abuse, different lifestyles. Individualists are more happy with home lives but get divorced more than collectivists. In individualist societies there is more personal freedom making it easier and less consequential to get a divorce. Has different impacts depending on the stage of the family life cycle, there is less disruption in the early stages. Infants and toddlers may experience a change in parental attachment and responsiveness.
