Oral communication and presentation skills: know your audience. Audiences are egocentric: why is this speech important to me? . Keep the audience constantly in mind as you prepare. An aural medium is always in the present tense. Content can"t be reviewed so it must me simple and clear. Ideas and info must be easily and quick comprehended and retained. An effective presentation is designed around a specific single purpose. That means you should have something clear and definitive to say and a reason for saying it. Clearly identify the main idea listeners are meant to retain. Supporting details should be simplified and relevant. Organized so listeners know clearly how each point relates to purpose. Use signpost words (my first point, my next point) to guide audience through the presentation: narrative structure (most effective) Information related as an accurate, credible and compelling story. To work, must be well-told, interesting and relevant.
