In this political speech, president obama uses pronouns as an effective persuasive function. Just like advertising discourse, the function of pronouns is used when referring to themselves, their political party and even their nation as a whole. Pronouns are commonly used in obscuring agency and responsibility. In this speech in particular the repetition of the pronoun we served in being inclusive to america, as it helps to share the responsibility for controversial actions (the terrorist attacks in paris). Some of the phrases obama used in his speech involved pronouns including we fight against them in extremism and we are reminding in this tragedy that the values that french people care about are also values that americans share . A noticeable technique used by obama in his speech was coercion. Coercion involves the practice of persuading one to do something by using force of threats.
