This is a contract of labor between the boss and the workers for a certain period of time. It was usually poor europeans but after a while chinese, indians were imported to the caribbean for indentured labour to work on the sugar plantations. Slavery is for lifetime while indentureship is for a period of time depending on the contract. Slave status was passed on generations while indentured status is not. Indentured laborers are seen as human beings while slaves were seen as property. Indentured laborers were given a wage while slaves were not. The portuguese were among the first indentured labourers. They moved to the caribbean because the wine business in which they ran was failing so they fled in hopes of a better life. Europeans they were not seen as white like the colonizers however they did climb in society relatively quickly. After indentureship, many went into shopkeeping, winemaking, small farming etc.
