As stars get more successful- and have good agents or advisors, and good luck - the balance of power tips from the studio to the star. Until the star can command so much money and resources that it cancels out the studio"s benefit from hiring the star. Who can say no without damage to their career/bottom line. The odds are low, and the career is short.
