Make a star change their name, plastic surgery, who they could/couldn"t marry or date. Rock hudson: the studios made him hide the fact he was gay. Changed over time based on cultural progress/changes but the basic narrative elements were the same. By 1970"s, this star system completely collapsed. Theatres could show independent and foreign films- american movies weren"t. Increasing individualism the only ones being shown in theatres anymore. Creative control and freedom vs financial security. All rights deals with artists, which gives the record labels a share of revenues. As stars get more successful- and have good agents or advisors, and good luck - the balance of power tips from the studio to the star. Until the star can command so much money and resources that it cancels out the studio"s benefit from hiring the star. Who can say no without damage to their career/bottom line. The odds are low, and the career is short.
