The copyright act provides for the funcioning of copyright collecives socieies, usually known simply as collecives regulated by the copyright board. Collecive do not themselves own rights, they act on behalf of rights owners. For example, the socan represents performing rights in musical works on behalf of composers and publishers. Canadian collecives represent right owners in many countries besides canada. The copyright board funcions like a lower court in that it takes evidence on disputed issues of facts and renders decisions. The songwriter"s associaion of canada has been working for some ime on a model to moneize ile sharing through collecives, proposing a monthly licence fee collected by internet service providers. Own of the most dauning challenges of working with copyright material is idenifying its owner. The author (term that the copyright act uses to refer to not only to writers but also to creators of all types of works.
