Treaties are numbered, in the order that they were negotiated. 19th/early 20th c: robinson and numbered treaties: land in exchange for ongoing rights, annuities &c. (mainly northern ontario, prairies) Economic transaction, but different that they establish an ongoing relationship. Instead of a one time exchange of money, protect a series of ongoing rights. Authority of land and they would see part of the territory seen for a reserve, to hunt, fish, preserve, etc.
