Kinds of sentences that are available: custodial ---> resulting corrections issues discussed next class, non-custodial ----> resulting corrections issues discussed today. More emphasis on rehabilitation more emphasis on punishment. Kicks in before a trial to prevent people who commit minor crimes from being convicted. Decision that is made is to have the offender to take some type of program or do community service rather than being convicted and out in the system. Goal is to make people understand why these things or crimes are prohibited. Programmes that are designed to keep offenders from being processed further into the formal justice system: not a punishment but something to avoid punishment. If the goal is punishment these programmes do not achieve that. People who would previously not be involved in the criminal justice system at all are now being involved in diversion programmes and providing rehabilitation.
