However, very limited: hears appeals from all courts of appeal, does not conduct trials, does not rehear evidence; will not call a witness that came to the original trial. Structure of offences: summary conviction offences: (quickly disposed of); (nb they are not called. Misdemeanours in canada!!!: less serious - reflected in lower maximum penalties and limitations on amount intrusion into accused life (eg pretrial detention) If you commit a minor offence, police can arrest you, but cannot hold you in jail overnight: tried before a judge alone, dealt with quickly. 75% of all cases are dealt with in 3 court appearances or less: most common offences, however not serious crimes. The public interest" and the courts (from the adams report, 1993): Implement diversion; not doing nothing, but diverting into something else.
