CRM 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Rationality, Trait Theory, Family Therapy
Document Summary
Classical theory started from an early age as choice theory. If crime is a rational choice based on calculus (decision to make crime or not) then the punishment should be known before crime. If punishments are not severe or sufficient enough then it will also be taken into calculus- punishment not severe enough not to commit crime. A lot of choice theory is based on utilitarianism- basic idea is society should operate to produce greatest amount of good for greatest amount of people. Punishments should still be sufficient and severe enough to deter crime but it should be fair with world"s view. Textbook says most crimes pay less than legitimate crime. Legal fees- cost that comes from not taking any process of crime in periods of incarceration. If taken in cost of legal fees, incarceration etc. crime does not pay. Underestimate level of risk of getting caught. Certain types of crimes that blend themselves well with the rational theory.
