People are egoisical, raional, and moivated by pain and pleasure. Behaviour can be modiied by fear of punishment. Must provide the greatest good for the greatest number (uilitarianism) Individuals give up some freedom in return for social protecion. Four objecives of punishment: to prevent all criminal ofences, to convince the ofender to commit the least serious crime possible, to ensure that a criminal uses no more force than necessary, to prevent crime as cheaply as possible. Most rimes pay less than legiimate work, and proits are reduced by costs of crime. Personal factors: need for money, revenge, thrills and entertainment. The decision is based on reasonable assessment of potenial gains and losses. Raionality and cunning in buying and selling, looking at which will get you severe punishment, good money.
