Document Summary

Official statistics are looking at legal crime. No right or wrong answer but there needs to be a degree of transparency. If talking about crime in canada overall, we need to use data collected by many different police forces: ex. Need to be aware of what gets defined as a crime and what does not: official crime data that falls under the criminal code. Ex. (theft, murder: not counting anti-social behaviours that do not fall under the criminal code. Ex. work health & safe laws or adultery. Detected crime: criminal is caught in the act by a police officer, police figure it out on their own: relatively small percentage of crime. Reported crime: crime that the victim or witness brings the attention to the police. We can track detected and reported crime but what about the dark figure of crime: might be small for some type of crime but might be large for other type of crime.
