Historical perspective: theoretical perspective emerged out of the 60"s and 70"s, the presumed social consensus of the 50"s faded replaced with youth culture, second wave feminism, and the civil rights movement. Labelling perspective: there are different perceptions of what constitutes a norm. There are particular power relations that determine what is deemed deviant and who gets to label people as deviant. Basic ideas of labelling perspectives: crime is a social process and defined by social action and reaction. Those who have the power to label define what is a crime: lack of consensus on social norms and values. It does not really matter what the actual, objective, situation, is. It matters how we define it, understand it, respond to it. Primary deviance: most engage in this usually transitory ----- formal sanctions: degradation, ceremony, stigmatization ------ change in self concept: new identity formed in response to negative labelling. ----- secondary deviance: commitment to new identity ba. sed on roles and relationships.
