Primary agents of socialization include family, religion, education, peer groups and media. The medium is the message (marshall mcluhan) means the way a message is communicated is as important as the content of the message itself. Overall, women watch more television than men do, although there is evidence of gender convergence. Women also watch more movies than do men. Young men watch the least tv of any group, women over 60 the most. Affluent and well educated people tend to watch less tv than other people. Women and visible minorities are overrepresented among frequent moviegoers. While diversity has increased, certain ethnic groups and sexual minorities are still underrepresented. In both television and film, women and racialized persons are underrepresented in production. Women are less likely to have speaking parts, and more likely to be depicted as young and sexually attractive.
