Although civil engineers have been contributing to our society through their practices in buildings and infrastructures, they are blamed for destruction of natural habitat and creation of a lot of wastes. The lecture examines the practices of civil engineering and their relationships with the environment and the emerging green practices that revolutionize the whole industry in the past 15 years. It begins with a brief introduction of civil engineering and follows by the environmental impacts of civil engineering practices. Emerging green civil engineering practices are discussed and summarized. Finally, a case study is used to demonstrate the eco-buildings. In the past, engineering was a trade where engineers solve societal problems such as irrigation, housing, drinking water and sanitation, etc. When science and ethics were applied to solve these society problems, engineering became a profession where quality of works and society responsibility were paramount.
