We focus on the physical first because that is what you see first. Referred to as the easiest element to promote growth due to its concrete nature. Concentrates on ways the physical setting is modified to enhance a sense of safety, inclusion and affirmation. Can be in the backyard, a classroom, therapy room, kitchen, schoolyard, etc. The physical milieu concerns itself with the layout of the room, the colour scheme on walls, the type of furniture, the type of lighting, emergency procedures, etc. A safe physical milieu is concerned with ensuring that the unsafe practices within the environment are consistently identified & addressed. The layout of the classroom must be organized to keep children &/or youth from being physically harmed. Potentially dangerous substances & objects must also be assessed for their ability to keep children &/or youth safe. This may involve locking up such items when not under the supervision of adults.
