Working with the entire family is often the optimal approach for dealing with young people at risk for dropout, substance use, pregnancy, delinquency, suicide, etc. The referring individual needs to identify the behaviour of the child that attracted attention, and should be explained in specific and concrete terms. Next, the referring individual must help the family understand that family counselling may help in the achievement of mutual goals. Counselling provides an opportunity for the family to work as a cohesive unit; the needs of all family members are considered in developing solutions to problems. Potential benefits increased responsibility among members for voicing their opinions and feelings, better grades for the children, more support and less stress for the family members include more appropriate behaviour by the child, Families are more accepting of recommendations if they have a sense of what to expect: psychoeducation about services and sessions, as well as roles of participants is important.
