Involves understanding: recognizing, responding to effects of all types of trauma (physical, psychological and emotional safety for both consumers and providers, helps survivors rebuild sense of control and empowerment. Essentials of tic: connect focus on relationships, protect protect safety and trustworthiness, respect engage in choice and collaboration, redirect (teach and reinforce) encourage skill-building and competence. Steps towards becoming trauma informed: administrative commitment to change, universal screening, staff training and education, hiring practices, review of policies and procedures. Core principles revisited: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, empowerment. Basic lesson: all staff can only create setting of, offer relationships characterized by, core principles listed above only when they experience these same factors in the program as a whole. Interest in spirituality or religion: respectful manner, capacity to get attention in positive ways, ability to plan ahead, good at problem solving, feeling of autonomy, positive outlook on life, belief that one"s effort can change things.
