CYC 804 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Deeper Understanding, Intercultural Competence
Document Summary
Recall that theory guides interpretation, explains central problems, directs assessment questions, defines interventions, and helps with response specificity. The theoretical framework has a major impact on data collection and intervention. No theory is true, must choose one to fit you and the client/intervention, while considering the legitimacy or the evidence-base of specific interventions. May need to research approaches to particular problems in light of the theory chosen, may need to understand and critique published literature on these approaches. Cyc approaches include life-space, developmental, rights and empowerment, and relational. The process of assessment involves mutual > learning > interpreting > understanding > recommending, but is non-linear. Interpreting and analyzing information involves attributing and ascribing of meaning to information that has been gathered, sifted, sorted and integrated. Meaning making may be a joint effort between the client and practitioner, sharing perceptions and working with information leading to an achievement of shared perception of information, which includes a mutual understanding.
