The medical model is the dominant discourse, how we are taught to think about madness, so pervasive that we don"t even realize that it is, seen as the only truth. Present madness as a de cit or dysfunction, something is wrong with or lacking in a person. Use terms such as mental illness (illness/health), each diagnosis involves traits that are lacking in the person (coping mechanisms, ssris, etc), trying to x the person. Pathology based, need to get better, treatment, xing the person, labeling madness (diagnosing) In the individual, the body experiences madness, individual sense of symptoms, response to problem becomes individual, no structural change; doesn"t consider social or structural levels.
