Appearance vs reality: people think its more important how she seems as opposed to how she actually is (girl with curious hair) pg 180. Actual or intended meaning is the opposite of the apparent meaning. Motif: a discrete thing, image, or phrase that is repeated in a narrative. Motifs reinforce themes theme: a larger, more general or abstract concepts that is suggested by motifs.
