Definition of sci-fi changed: new wave of sci-fi. Collection of works by sophisticated authors who saw that sci-fi was a useful mode of analyzing society. Do androids dream of electric sheep by philip dick. The left hand of darkness by ursula leguin: feminist theme, a world that is ambisexual; characters are genderless --> no concept of gender. The female man by joanna russ: feminist theme, 4 women in 4 different worlds, defamiliarizes the concept of sexism and how men and women relate to each other. Kindred by octavia butler: defamiliarizes race, time travel in pre-civil war days. Neuromancer by william gibson: founding text of cyber-punk. Dystopian worlds with class inequality, corporations rule the people. Cyber = computers play a massive role. Punk = main character is usually of lower class and use computers to fight back against the corporations. What is se: uses a mode of sci-fi, but not necessarily a sci-fi vibe to the novel.
