Story is loosely based on the clayton tunnel crash (23 dead) Dickens himself survived the staplehurst crash of 1865 (10 dead: he was in one of the cars that did not overturn, but he helped the injured and he was scarred by the trauma. Is it a ghost or something else: it is a premonition, rather than a remnant from the past. Is the signalman insane: the signalman is never presented as insane, the fact that the narrator shares the signalman"s feelings and thoughts, the signalman is never shown as mad. The signalman does not always know the meaning of what he is being relayed or what he himself relays, he is merely following a series of actions.
